First off, let me say that I hesitate to use the word 'solanum', since that's not the only zombie virus argued over on this board.
Second, is it possible that a zombie virus could be a mutant strain of rabies? It creates a maddening sensation in the victim, it's transferred in the same general manner that rabies is, it eventually kills the victim...
Thoughts?

well, you do make a good point. Viruses mutate over time, so I would say that it is a possibility , but not in the near future, not unless somebody enhanced it to bring people back to life and all that jazz.
The one word that describes how i live: B.E.B.Z
(Bullets, Explosions, Babes, Zombies)
Oh, yeah, you heard me! THE MUPPET SHOW SAID SO!!!
Interesting to think of the virus as a mutant strain of the virus. I would love to see the virus work in such as way as rabies. I like the take that you have on the objectivity of the virus. The question then becomes: how could the virus evolve to such a point?
Until the zombies come the damage that I try to control is caused by water and fire damage in the San Diego area. http://belfor.com/en/USA/California/San-Diego.aspx
