Back in 1989, I managed to get one of these bad boys from a friend of mine for $20 & trade of a Buck 110 knife. This was a truly exceptional knife, both in balance and form. Some folks say that the tip doesn't have the proper reinforcement to make this a suitable combat knife. In most respects, I agree, as I've already stated that combat knives should be utilitarian as well. Thus, I consider the Gerber Mark II to be an extremely effective FIGHTING knife.

Over the years, I've carried this knife "Illegally" as a boot knife. I even tried to carry with with me to the the big Sand Box, but my CO disabused me of that idea... In any case, it was back in my hands when I got home. From there, it travelled with me to DSS, where it rested comfortably in a custom made sheath on my left calf, just behind my ankle bone. Nestled deep within my boot, it was always within easy reach when I needed it (which is to say, not often). Now, the funny thing about certain knives is that we get really attached to the great ones. Hell, I've seen guys grow attached to a POS that their Dads gave them in grade school. In any case, I loved this knife and always felt safe when it was near at hand.

In 1997, shortly after the KLA attacked the Serbian Security forces in Kosovo, I lost my knife. I was there with a diplomatic delegation that saw a bit of action on that front. I really missed that knife, but it was lost protecting my life.

Shortly after my M/C accident, I had the opportunity to acquire another one, which I did with much haste. Ever since then, I have felt much better,

This knife will stand up to any rigors that a fighting knife may come into action for. I can honestly say, that the Gerber Mark II has few equals in its role as a fighter in my experience, and will always hold a very special place in my heart, and my arsenal. If you are looking for a great fighting knife, and have the training to use it properly, GET THIS KNIFE!

The steel will hold a razors edge. What it lacks in cutting power, it makes up for in stabbing. It will punch through just about any gear your opponent may be wearing with ease. The serrations toward the guard of the knife are great when you have to do reguar knife working thats not fighting related. The only drawback is that they are difficult to resharpen without the proper sharpener. Also, the tip will bend or break on a trauma plate or dense metal gear, so use it appropriately, and go for the "soft" spots. The tip can easily be redone with a grinder or light file work, and be even stronger than the original tip. Something to keep in mind.
