I've come up with this guide to give examples and techniques that could be employed should one need to recon an area for information. Keep in mind that these techniques can be used in a mixed capacity or singularly depending upon the situation, level of preparation, and materials available for effective reconnaissance.
Direct Reconnaissance
Large group: You send out a large group of people and bring back pictures or descriptions.

Usage
You send out a group of between 10 and 30 people somewhat heavily armed. All the people in the group need to have rudimentary drawing skills or descriptive writing ability. If you decide to do so, you may split into smaller groups to cover parts of cities, towns, or country with one or two agreed upon regroup points. A regroup time may also be a good idea in case a group runs into trouble.

Usage:
You send out a small group of people, armed with lightweight but effective weaponry and rations. To make it easier for the group to find supplies, the weapons should use m4/m16 magazines, or use standard pistol caliber ammo. Weapons with a bullpup configuration will be lighter and less bulky, making the user more agile. Each person should carry between 200 and 300 rounds of ammo. A sidearm is optional, and must be lightweight. The group should be between two and ten people. It should include a medic, and everyone in the group should have at least rudimentary first-aid skills and be carrying light first-aid kits. As a general rule, if you plan on them going longer distances, have no fewer than four people. They all need to be skilled in sketching things, and/or descriptive writing and need to be very observant. If you can get them cameras with film and have the ability to develop the film, then do so. If you have electricity, make it a priority to give them radios. To cover areas in detail, they can split into even smaller groups, such as pairs.

Usage:
RC cars and planes are useful for short-range reconnaissance, and for improving of the effect of direct reconnaissance. However, a downside is the fact that they must carry a camera of some type, they and the camera require electricity, and they're easy to damage and hard to repair. This is all in addition to their very short range. They can also lure zombies back to base. You find a cheap remote control car, boat, plane, or helicopter. If it doesn't have a built in camera, install one on a sturdy mount and transmit it somehow. You use it out in the field for reconnaissance on enemy forces or terrain. It can also be used to provide detailed, unobstructed visuals of the area around your base, and provide a warning of approaching people or zombies. Because such things are in abundance, it's OK if it is destroyed. Be careful, but do not be fearful, unless you're in the middle of no where and you brought only one with you. If it is destroyed, salvage the transmitter and camera at a later time.

Can be used for long range reconnaissance. They aren't going to be hit by a zombie, and are hard to shoot out of the sky with your average semi-automatic weapon if they're flying fast. They also can capture high-quality imagery. On the downside, they can be USD10,000. They would also be hard to find after z-day. United Nuclear (http:\\www.unitednuclear.com/jetengines) sells small jet engines providing up to 30 pounds of force, if you're interested in building your own. This is the kind of thing that needs to be prepared and ready before z-day. You need a reasonably durable, long-ranged remote control aircraft or ground vehicle. You should mount a high-quality camera on it beforehand, and have a transmitter and receiver ready. Ensure that you will have electricity and/or fuel. Always keep spares for everything. You can use it for short or long range reconnaissance in the field or from a base, because it can provide detail and is mostly unaffected by obstacles, although you should try to stay out of the woods with aircraft. Be careful. If you break it beyond repair, you probably won't ever get another one. Even if it repairable, you may not be able to get to it, so once again, be extremely careful.

Usage:
Telescopes and binoculars are useful for medium-range to long range reconnaissance, depending on the power of the optics. They provide great detail, as long as visibility is good and nothing is in the way.
Telescopes and binoculars will probably be in good supply after a disaster. They can be used for short range reconnaissance, and some can be used for long range. You must be careful not to use cheap, poorly made ones, because peoples' lives may rely on them. In the field close or medium range ones should be carried by a few people, regardless of the purpose of the group. Longer ranged optics should be mounted on vehicles or at a base, and kept as far off the ground as possible. Keep the lenses of all optics clean, and covered when not in use. They should not be relied on as your only source of reconnaissance, because most optics will only work during the day when you have light.

Usage:
A bundle of fiber-optic cables can transmit an image long distances. They are great when you know where you want to observe. However, this is pointless if you are on the move or don't know exactly where you want to observe. On the other hand, it provides real-time reconnaissance, and you could even have a full 360 degree view if you set up telescopes or periscopes on all four sides of a tower, and run fiber optics from all of them to your base or outpost. If possible, set such a thing up before a disaster. You will have easier access to high quality fiber-optics then. The more fibers you can fit into a space, the more detail you have, and the clearer each fiber is, the better color you have. You can set up a periscope or telescope on a tower far from your base. You replace the view piece with a bundle of fiber optic cables, and run these on, above, or under the ground all the way to your base or an outpost, where they are hooked up to a view piece like a lens or something. The denser the cables, the better resolution you get. If the device on the far end also has a solar-charged flashlight, it will provide you with long-range reconnaissance all day long. You can increase detail for large fibers by packing them as tight as possible, and then putting a lens on the end which detects the image to expand a small image to fit the entire bundle, and then focusing it at the receiving end. It will increase detail, but decrease area. Area can be increased by increasing the size of a bundle or reversing the process described above, putting a lens on the detecting end to focus a large area onto the bundle and then expanding it again at the watchers end, however, this process will of course reduce detail.

Camouflage: Camouflage is important for both direct reconnaissance, and other forms. I am not an expert on camouflage, so if anyone wants detailed information, I would recommend Army Field Manual 5-20 and Army Field Manual 20-3. When it comes to direct reconnaissance, you very rarely want to be known, and would prefer to stay hidden. However, when it comes to remote reconnaissance, a number of factors apply. What it really comes down to is do you want your presence to be known, and over how large an area. There are advantages and disadvantages to having your territory known. If it is known, you may scare off some weaker potential enemies and possibly draw potential allies. However, you may also fail to scare the stronger and/or more arrogant and now they know where you are. If you are confident in your ability to defend your location, then allowing the ones within a certain distance of you to be visible is probably a good idea. Since it is generally held (and hoped for) that zombies won't be particularly intelligent, you need not worry about them noticing your reconnaissance, so long as you don't have flashing lights and sound and other things like that. If a group of the uninfected are walking through your area and don't notice your not-particularly-camouflaged stations or robots or whatever you're using, you probably don't need to worry about it anyways.

Hum, are you suggesting I add a section in on single man recon? I'll think about it. Actually, the cheaper RC planes could be useful for allowing a single scout to see more.
The only issue with RC planes is that you don't throw off the aerodynamics of its flight with the camera. Not sure of the specifics of that though, just an issue to consider.

Another thing that I use are motion sensors/cameras that can be attached to trees and disguised as rocks . I actually got them through my home security provider. They have one that's a rock with a screen that camouflages in with the rest of the rock with a hidden camera inside. Another one that they have is just a camera with leafs strapped to it. Both are motion activated, and can be set to alert you.. perfect in case your house gets overrun by a horde while you're sleeping.

my stepdads dad makes them rc planes mostly of balsa wood. yea itd be expensive but in the z-day chaos if anythings not getting raided its a hobby shop. also if you make it yourself you can make multiple if the motors allow and balance based on the cameras weight. not to mention they make small cameras that with the right signal you could get it to send back for miles. as for attracting zeds if youre flying nearby and keep high until real close to base the only one who will notice(in theory) the ones thatll probably stumble by anyways. why would you need to draw if you have any electricity at all even a running vehicle youll most likely have a cellphone at least to take pictures or video. the manned force is a risk anyway you put it. a good method would be to squad out. clear stragglers near your base first then have a 2 layer scout. send about 8 out all armed. 6 sit back in a safe area armed to the teeth with the heavy guns while 2 or 3 go up with melee, crossbows and a handgun. this is so they can pick off the odd one or two while taking pictures and noting possible supplies, secondary posts and bug out bases. if the small group runs into too many they bug back to base with the 6 ready to blast some zed hed.
definitely true but there are cameras and transmitters that can transmit past that 1/4 mile giving you a live feed if you have the power to charge a camera and r/c car(any cheap generator or a few solar panels can handle it not much powers needed if you got good equipment) and a 1/4 mile is more then enough to get a few solos to pick off or to avoid a mob. with a low to zero chance of loss of life and if youre in the right place a lot of sacraficial technology its well worth using if you are able.
This is a well written article, but the topic name is wrong. It should be "types of recon" not techniques. They are techniques, but its more they are broad categories of types of recon. Recon techniques are stuff like; surveillance, tracking, causality prediction, numbers gathering, caching, signaling, data transmission. You knowtechniques that teach you how to do recon.
A couple of points - a recon unit should never be less than 4 people if at all possible. When you get less than four people the possibilities for trouble expand dramatically. It is generally accepted that it takes two to carry one for any distance and a four man fire team can cover most approaches to a position where a smalelr group could not. A four man team also allows for more rest among its members allowing the team to remain functional longer while in the field.
Also, be wary of observations gained through binoculars, scopes, and other long distance viewing. All of these devices alter perception of depth and shadow to one extent or another. It is very easy for an observer on a ridge to miss a fold or enfilade in the valley beneath them.
Some (very) basic rules of thumb for reconning an area.
1) Take as much time as you reasonably can. You may notice something on the second or third glance that you didn't see on the first one.
2) When in doubt remain hidden. Your default mindset should always be stealth. You can always introduce yourself to somebody after you have made certain they are not a threat. It is a lot harder to hide after they know to look for you. This includes obscuring signs of your passage. Don't cut through underbrush unless you have no other choice - including going around. Avoid leaving obvious foot prints and walk in a single file line when ever possible. Avoid half full canteens that might slosh, strap down any equipment that might rattle, cover reflecting surfaces as much as possible, keep radios silent when not in use.
3) Stop, look, and listen - more often than you think is appropriate.
4) Watch where you're going and where you've been. Don't let the bad guys slip up behind you.
5) Only the dead are safe. Be wary of danger even when you think you should be safe.
6) The path of least resistance is the shortest road to an ambush.
7) Don't bunch up. In modern warfare this is mostly to avoid ambushes and explosives like grenades and land mines. When your primary threat is zombies you should be close enough to offer assistance but not so close that the sudden appearance of zombies catches everybody within easy reach.
Cool Know what to do in the event of trouble BEFORE you get into trouble. Plan how your team is going to respond to different types of ambushes from different directions. Have at least two, preferrably three to four rally points in case people get seperated from the group. Everyone must know the route you are taking into the area and the seperate route you are taking out o the area.
9) There is no such thing as a free lunch. Always assume the building is occupied by hostiles. Always assume that bush is concealing a threat. Always assume the water is deeper/colder/faster than it looks. Always assume the snake/berry/bug is poisonous. Always assume the worst until you know for certain that it isn't.
10) Animals have better senses then you do. Use that to your advantage. If you have a properly trained dog with you then use that. If you don't pay attention to the prey animals and the carrion animals in the area. They will often be your first clues to danger.
11) Never be alone. Go everywhere together. "Divide and conquer" refers to the enemy not to your own forces. If someone has to go to the bathroom then everybody stays together. This is no time for modesty. It may be quicker to split into two man teams or even singles to explore an area but it is also the best way to get one of your people killed.
12) Trust no one - Keep your weapon handy at all times. A 12 year old girl with a hand grenade is just as lethal as Rambo if she can get close enough to hit you with it. I am not saying kill everyone on sight. I am saying don't fall victim to your own assumptions. Yes, this is sort of a repeat of #9 above. Yes, it is that important.
I thought of an airship for RC device, size relative to the weight it needs to carry, it does not nessary need to be big and may be able to handle communications to ground units from command used for long range spotting

pros-light weight, can be built of common materials, uses energy when needed for movement. can hover, has stealth quite operation. can use wireless networks. aid in communication links.
I have a few "issues", for a lack of a better word.
First, for your large group... "Group members not well trained" You have this as a Pro. This is a Con. And should ALWAYS be a con. Also, you really don't want to send out 10-30 people to gather intel. First, stealth is non-existent. Second, you'll get the same info from different people, as well as info that isn't necessary, and sorting this out is a pain.
For your small group... "High-quality information" and "Fast info-gathering rate" Both assume that the small group is well trained. If it isn't, then you will have neither. Also, smaller groups tend to take longer to gather intel due to the fact that they can't cover as much ground as larger groups. When it comes to the quality of the intel/info, the size of the group is irrelevent, what matters is their level of training, practice and experience. There is such a thing as "too much info".
