Dead Island

Okay, so a while ago, I read some very intriguing articles about about a video game that was in production.
Later on, a couple years later, I had heard that it was canceled, and just recently I have been hearing that it was picked up by a different publisher, and is now back in production, but as per the contractual agreement between the original producers and the new company, a media black-out was still in effect for it.
There are only a few pictures and a couple of short teasers out there, and there is still very little to be heard,
so my question to the community is, has anyone heard anything? The game's name is "Dead Island", and the reason I was so intrigued in the first place was because of the supposed, "Gritty Realism" involved, and the hyped-up graphics that would have real-time decomposition from environmental effects involved, and the use of basic tools such as a board pried from a fence, or a simple claw hammer as weapons, instead of being a straight out shooter. This honestly made me grin the first time I heard it, and if it had come out, it may have had potential to win many awards, but because of the media black-out agreement, information is hard to find, and shaky at best on the information already out there. I assume most of it is just a load of guessing and simple confusion, but this seems like the right place to ask, and as far as I know, the game was started back in 2005-2006, so HAS anyone heard anything?

I'm back from hibernation all. =3

Plus, this looks awesome, more information if you could, also me and a pal have maybe been thinking about putting together a lil' zombie game ourselves, a lil' sprite/text based game revolving around abilities and what not. Like I said, we've been "thinking" about it. =D

I'd rather do a Half Life 2 mod, allows you to get serious about what you're doing.
But yeah, from what I can tell, it's on media black-out, and is still in production.
No release date, no time estimation, just that it's still going.

Ah, you beat me to it Support! Actually came on here to post the link :p
A friend showed me the trailer and I couldn't help but watch it over and over. It was a little disorienting watching everything happen backward though and I couldn't resist my curiosity - I had to see the clip re reversed.

I've uploaded the re reversed clip here

looks pretty friggin awesome, however also looks somewhat similar to Left 4 dead 2. (not that that is a bad thing) :D

Hey, if it's not broken, why fix it right?
Although, I think it'll be somewhat different from L4D in that L4D was a straight-up shooter. Even when they brought in melee weapons in L4D2, it didn't really have that gritty feel to it you'd get from ACTUALLY using a fire axe to hack through hoards of zombies.
Dead Island is supposed to be more gritty, more realistic, and focus more on the use of commonplace weapons such as claw hammers, fire axes, etc.
As much as I'm a fan of L4D (wasn't such a big fan of L4D2) I think Dead Island is going to be MUCH better.

there was a "zombie" game that game informer had an article on a few years ago, i think sometime in 05, where you woke up on a beach wearing military camo. you could use just about anything as a weapon, from a broken piece of drift wood, to a curling iron, with a few guns thrown in. you lost your memory and as the game progressed you got more pieces of it back. if i remember right it went something like: you were part of a military group that was called in to take care of riots in new york after a "plague" broke out. they couldnt contain it, so they evacuated the military. somehow you got left behind before they blew up the bridge and isolated you and a few survivors on new york. you could take parts off of cars and build your own "mad max-esq" vehicle and roam around chopping zeds off at the ankles with tire spikes and stuff like that as long as you had gas to do so, which you could siphon off other cars. the big hoopla about it was the fact that the zombies were not designed as a whole. there were thousands of individual parts in a "pool" and were created from a random collection that was thrown together before you see them so you could wander for hours and never see the same one twice, kinda like the guns in borderlands is set up. from what i remember there were 3 kinds of zeds. normal walkers that were easy enough to kill, bigger "body builder" type guys that took about the same damage as a gorilla wearing kevlar could, and the major mutation types that i think looked like the lickers from the resident evil movies. if you were not careful enough they would jump on your car, rip the top off, and eat you like a can of sardines. sounded awesome and i was sooo ticked that they decided to trash it since they "didnt have enough funds" to complete the project. i heard some other company picked it up and was going to try and put it out, so maybe this is what it evolved into. i still hope for the day when that unremembered game hits the shelves, but i think i will be waiting a LOOOOONG time.

It is different from left 4 dead, more modifying weapons like in dead rising 2. check out the above link. looks pretty sweet.
and specialists a "leader," a "tank," a "jack-of-all-trades," and an "assassin." Me gusta!

Yep, there's runners and walkers, and likely more types to be added. Kinda disappoints me that it's not just Romero true, but it still has AMAZING potential. Who knows, maybe there's a "Zombie Fanatic" mode that has no HUD and is very true to Romero hordes.
Here's Hoping!
Still have such a long wait though....

Definantly one of the few games I am looking forward to this year. heres to hoping its every bit as good as we've all been hoping.

< Penn> Nori is the alpha and the omega
< Penn> He is the master of all things cool. or cold, really.
< Penn> Conqueror of the great white north, Nori Of Alaska

Well, the game is out now, and its awesome, although not as in-depth as originally planned. Its not as fine tuned as the dead rising games or left 4 dead, but definitely worth the time and money. Maybe they will learn from their mistakes and the sequel (please please please) will be the main zombie game created this decade.

While I agree that it is not as in depth, I have to say, after playing for the past 2 days, the mission set up makes it feel like Fallout. You are constantly doing missions, gaining experience, which at some point or another WILL lead you to more clues to whats going on. That being said, you have to know what to look for. And that not just aimed at cool weapons or looting bodies for cash. I played the first dead rising and couldn't stand it. I own both L4d 1 and 2 and quickly got bored playing the same levels over and over and over again. This game, to me, feels right. And granted the story could use some work as well as the graphics in some areas and I am pissed they don't allow split screen, the game is good for what it is, an online multiplayer rpg with character and weapon mods. In my opinion, if they were going to change something, they should have made it an MMO. I'm sure seeing 16 people from zpi playing this game as a group would be hilarious.

Aye that would be great...

I have the game pre-ordered, but since I'm going to school a few hours from home my mother was to pick it up for me, and I'm supposed to be getting it this weekend...

Nobody provides good split screen anymore... It would make them lose too much money because they aren't making everybody buy a console, and the game for themselves to be able to play with friends...

I miss the good 'ol days of split screen games on the N64...

My live subscription ran out... I'm gonna try to get it back this weekend... convince either a roommate, or my parents to run me up to walmart to get a card...
